In its desire to foster the development of children's full potential and promote equal opportunity, the government of Quebec emphasizes the importance of acting early and ensuring individualized follow-up for each child in order to be supported "with benevolence" by all education stakeholders (Feyfant, 2014; MEES, 2017; MEES, 2018). In this regard, he proposes certain strategies for framing the child's educational success, including the use of a child's educational record (MEES, 2019), which is essential for improving educational quality. However, to build the educational file, the practice of observation is required (MF, 2019) as well as certain knowledge Martins, and Brault-Tabaï, 2021) to be acquired to implement the «knowing how to observe» competence. This paper presents the state of the research in progress by announcing the underlying problematic that leads to the following research question: How do educators use the skill of «knowing how to observe» in order to account for the holistic development of children aged 3 to 5 and to construct their portrait within the educational file? In parallel, she presents the theoretical framework, i.e., the elements on which the 3rd competency "knowing how to observe" from the Ministry's competency framework is based, essential for writing a complete portrait of the child (MF, 2021) and overcoming the challenges of observation (Zogmal, 2015). Finally, it outlines the methodology used to achieve the stated goals while the discussion focuses on the essential information to consider when writing periodic child portraits.
