What does it mean to be a revolutionary Black feminist scholar-activist? For us as Black women to walk into our destinies of greatness, we have to be, by nature, revolutionary. Not necessarily in the sense of how we have typically understood revolutionary in terms of violence. But revolutionary in its Latin-based roots, “to revolve, turn around.” Autobiographical and biographical writing by Black women is often a radical and rebellious act. In order for our writing to be revolutionary, we must engage in the work of revelation – revealing to the world parts of ourselves that may have been hidden. This revolutionary revelation writing requires a unique tool that is flexible, fluid, empowering, creative, liberating, and personal. A Black Wild Womanist Autoethnography is such a tool that facilitates an understanding of the initiation journey from Blackgirlhood to Blackwomanhood. It is a transdisciplinary tool that draws from multiple theoretical, methodological, and praxis frameworks and foundations. A Black Wild Womanist Autoethnography includes Black women’s autobiographical writings; critical praxis autoethnography; Black Girl cartography; Black Feminist Thought and Black girlhood studies; critical Black feminism, including Hip Hop Feminism, Crunk Feminism, and the New Black Feminism; womanist thought; womanist theology; and the wild woman archetype. A Black Wild Womanist Autoethnography, as a methodology, is applied to 45 years of journals, chronicling a Black woman’s initiation journey from Blackgirlhood to Blackwomanhood. Revelations include lessons about reclaiming personal power; reconciliation; and the challenges of managing race and gender in America as a Black woman.
