Session: Session 2
Room: 321A
Presentation Type:Oral Presentation
It is widely accepted that language skills support school readiness and predict later self-regulation and academic performance (Ramsook, Welsh, & Bierman, 2020). Although vocabulary is often discussed, some research has shown that the appropriate use of language in social contexts, or social communication skills, is also critical (Bishop, 1998). In this presentation, evidence-based concepts will be shared in order to better understand how early language development can shape future learning, academic success and social communication skills. The longitudinal contribution of risk and protective factors on language development will be presented. The characteristics of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) will be presented, affecting approximately 7% of all children and having a negative effect on writing, literacy, academic performance and future employment (Aguilar-Mediavilla et al., 2019; Cronin, 2017; Norbury et al., 2016; Tomblin et al., 1997). Finally, strategies to support language development and social communication skills will be presented in order to promote school readiness.
