The Early Learning Curriculum (MEQ, 2021) highlights the importance of executive functions. Of the four functions present, one allows the child to self-regulate, adjust, and reflect on the situation (Dehaene, 2011); this is inhibitory control. The latter is present in all areas of child development (MEQ, 2021) and contributes to its educational success (Duval et al, 2016). However, the quality of the child’s commitment (Downer et al., 2012), specifically in the area of task guidance, which corresponds to the child’s commitment to task, autonomy and behavioural control (Downer et al., 2012), seems related to the development of its inhibitory control. This proposal, based on a study of 10 children attending preschool at age 5, links statistical analyses from the inCLASS tool (Downer et al., 2012) on the quality of commitment with those from the NEPSY II tool (Korman et al, 2012) on the development of inhibitory control of the child. The discussion revolves around the reflection on the consideration of the quality of the commitment of the child in preschool 5 years as support for the development of its inhibitory control. Also, we will discuss about the development opportunities to set up in preschool class to support the child’s commitment and thereby contribute to the development of its inhibitory control, with the goal of educational success for all.
