While the pandemic event has produced a tremendous shift in how many of us experience education, research and healthcare it is not yet clear how these dramatic changes may have affected the characteristics of the populations we teach, study and serve. There are many factors that determine who seeks services at a particular location, and it is beneficial to be familiar with the nature of these participants so that they can receive better service. This quantitative study examines the differences in frequency and intensity of anxiety, depression and resilience factors before and after COVID related lockdowns that were initiated in the spring of 2020. These overall changes were then compared between young (i.e. aged 18 and younger) and old (i.e. aged 19 and older) participants and three gender identifications (i.e. male, female, N/A) using a two-way Multiple Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). The results indicated that both depression and anxiety scores have increased since the onset of the pandemic and furthermore, that this increase in younger participants was significantly greater than their older counterparts. Prior to COVID related lockdowns the average GAD-7 score of “young” participants indicated “mild” anxiety and PHQ-9 scores indicating “mild” depression symptoms. In the participants whose data were collected after COVID related lockdowns these clinical classifications increased one level to “moderate” for anxiety and two levels to “moderately severe” for depression. There was no significant change over time for older participants and there were no significant differences between gender groups.
