This presentation will introduce the purpose of the development and outline of the Natural Conversation Resource Bank (NCRB), a new type of database developed by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics. NCRB consists of two parts: "for research" and "for teaching materials." The latter has the function of creating teaching materials with movies, sounds, and transcripts of naturally occurring conversations. This presentation will discuss the characteristics of these teaching materials and how to create them using the "support function for creating teaching materials" in the NCRB. Traditionally, there have been many requests in Japanese language education for students to acquire natural conversational skills. However, few teaching materials can answer these needs. It is challenging to incorporate into regular textbooks the natural pronunciation, tones, pauses, fillers, backchannels, and overlaps in the actual conversation. Therefore, to facilitate awareness of authentic natural communication style and cultivate natural communicative competence, it is essential to create actual "teaching materials based on natural conversation" (Usami, 2020). However, creating such teaching materials requires enormous time and effort. Therefore, creating a system that enables all instructors to collaborate in creating "teaching materials based on natural conversations" are necessary. Based on this concept and In light of the development of today's ICT environment, the NCRB was constructed as an online platform for research based on natural conversation data and for creating communication teaching materials. In the presentation, I will introduce the functions of "making teaching materials" of NCRB more concretely and discuss how to utilize them.
