The continual evolution of educational settings poses significant opportunities and challenges for integrating technology. Based on the findings from a research study conducted during the rapid transition from face-to-face instruction to online synchronous instruction via Zoom in March of 20202, there is a need for flexibility in providing opportunities for students to learn and interact in a hybrid world. Escape rooms offer a way to collaborate with others and build community either face-to-face or online. This presentation will use the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework to illustrate how escape rooms can be used to assess the reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills at novice-and intermediate-level classes. While escape rooms are a non-standard way of assessment, they ignite curiosity, engagement, and motivation in the language classroom. Escape rooms provide a setting for learners to find the cues, decode locks, solve puzzles, and speak while in the target language. Through the use of target tasks and practical ideas, escape rooms provide instructors with a unique opportunity to observe the learners' progression toward developing their skills in the target language. Similarly, escape rooms offer learning opportunities for the learners' professional lives as they work and collaborate with different peers and personalities. Are you ready to explore this escape room?
