South Africa’s choral culture is vibrant, diverse, and unique. Singing in a choir is an essential part of a lot of people in this young democracy. This nation at the southern tip of Africa boasts world-class choirs, conductors, and composers. What have the leaders in this field done to contribute to the unification of a people after the fall of apartheid in the 1990s? What makes the choral scene in South Africa so unique? Is it our colonial past? Our multiple official languages? This session shares key points from the presenters' experiences as current/former choral conductors in South Africa, and how song was and is still used in nation-building in South Africa.
