Students and employees at higher educational institutions face problems concerning enrollment, decreased finances and funding, declining rankings, and the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, students and staff are suffering: one in three college students exhibits depression and anxiety, and in one study, 80% of university staff reported burnout, anxiety, depression, and PTSD (Mayo Clinic Health System, 2022; Tucker et al., 2022). To address these challenges, employees of Pellissippi State Community College, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, attempt to serve students, fellow colleagues, and the community through the core values of accountability; community and civic engagement; diversity, equity, and inclusion; excellence; integrity; and relationships. Employees of the college pursue professional development opportunities centered around these values, one being the Pellissippi Academy, a peer-led program consisting of five cohorts. The themes of these cohorts include change and conflict management; communication; diversity and inclusion; emotional intelligence; and leadership. In the cohorts, which form and meet each academic year, members assist one another in developing cooperative and interactive skills. The Academy is unique to Pellissippi State; in an informal survey of employees at five other colleges in the Knoxville area, zero respondents reported similar peer-led professional development programs at their institutions. In this presentation, co-champions of Pellissippi Academy’s Communication Cohort, Annette Eldridge and Anna Childs, will discuss how they use the group to target communication, social connection, and emotional health, as well as to address higher educational concerns and positively impact the college and community beyond.
