This presentation aims to share the experiences of our novice collaborative faculty-student research project that began in May of 2020. In March 2020, as the world suddenly was thrust into a pandemic, nursing students and faculty needed to adapt to teaching, learning, and research in an untraditional way. During this time, several faculty from the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBSCN) program came together with two nursing students from the psychiatric nursing program and a student from the SCBSCN program. The team was formed through a mutual desire to explore undergraduate nursing students' mental health and wellness during the early months of the pandemic. However, all group members had little or no experience in research. The team utilized mentorship as a critical touchstone in their project design to build the capacity of each team member to grow skills in nursing education research. The group experienced many challenges. Unique situations arose, such as lack of textbook access on methodology due to libraries being shut down and the inability to do confidential in-person interviews. The team also faced a lack of expertise in their selected research methodology. Despite challenges, the nursing students and faculty persevered with creative solutions. They produced meaningful research that contributed to a growing body of literature on how covid-19 impacted undergraduate students and specific key strategies to buffer these negative impacts.
